Judge won’t extend von Einem term over child porn

A Supreme Court judge has declined to extend the non-parole term of notorious killer Bevan Spencer von Einem, after child pornography was found in his cell.

Von Einem, 63, is serving a life jail sentence for the 1983 murder of Adelaide teenager Richard Kelvin.

His non-parole period expired two years ago.

In June, von Einem was sentenced to three months’ jail after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography.

The handwritten stories about children were found in his cell but a magistrate accepted he was not the author and had not read the material, which von Einem said he was keeping as insurance.

Justice John Sulan said today it would serve no personal or general deterrence to extend von Einem’s non-parole period.

The South Australian Government has long pledged that von Einem will never be released from custody.
